The war in Ukraine is a tragedy for the present, the future and the past

March 07, 2022 | Current Russia and Memorial

Putin's war in Ukraine is a huge tragedy for the present, the future and the past. Let us help everyone where we can, refugees from Ukraine, with a collection for humanitarian and practical assistance to Ukrainians. We also think of the citizens of Russia who do not agree with the war and are arrested for their disagreement.

History repeats itself - the people of Russia are being persecuted again. And those who tried to deal with the Soviet repressive past are also persecuted. We are shocked by the current persecution of the Russian state against our Memorial partners. We are concerned about the fate of the results of their work and the archives on the Gulag and Soviet repression. We are concerned about the fate of the archives in Ukraine, which have been fully open in the past thanks to the will and enthusiasm of our Ukrainian colleagues.

We are in contact with our colleagues in Ukraine and Russia, and we believe that their work will survive the current senseless war and the Russian regime's efforts to rewrite history.
