Victims of the Soviet Gulag, executions and deportations included among the millions of members of many nations more than 20 thousand Czechs, Slovaks and other Czechoslovak citizens. We search in the archives and among the witnesses and discover long-forgotten stories in order to complete this little-known chapter of Czech history. We also commemorate the victims at various events, to which we try to attract the attention of the Czech public.

Archives and stories
Thanks to our expeditions, cooperation with Czech and foreign partners (including the Russian Memorial Association) and access to Russian, Ukrainian and other archives, we manage from time to time to find hitherto unknown stories of Czechs persecuted in the Soviet Union. We process and publish these stories as text or video on our websites, or in cooperation with Czech and foreign media. The result is, among the others:
- Documentary series Czechs and the Great Terror
- Articles and processed stories in the virtual museum

Returning the names
Every year on October 29, on the eve of Russia's Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression, we remember the names of those who died as a result of Soviet state terror. Among the millions of these victims are also thousands of Czechs or citizens of Czechoslovakia. We regularly read their names at the memorial to the victims of the communist regime in Prague's Újezd.
An overview of all years of the Return of Names event, which we have been organizing in the Czech Republic since 2017, including lists of medallions read, can be found HERE

Memsearch.org - Database search engine on Soviet repression
At www.memsearch.org, we have launched a search system called "Memory of Repression", which links databases that aggregate information about Soviet repression. This is a joint project of the Memorial association and other memory institutions from several Russian regions (Krasnoyarsk, Moscow, Perm, Ryazan, St. Petersburg), the former Perm-36 museum and our organization Gulag.cz, which ensured the technical implementation of the project.
More about this tool, which allows you to search for information not only about Czechs, but also about all other victims of Soviet repression you can find it HERE

Last address
"One name, one life, one table." That's the motto of the originally Russian Last Address project, which we helped expand to the Czech environment in June 2017. You can read more about the project HERE.

Czech places of conscience in a global context
What do the Gulag, places and museums of conscience in the USA, old Karviná, Lety u Písku, "Our Germans" in Ústí nad Labem, the interpretation of local heritage, the war in Ukraine and refugees heading to the Czech Republic have in common? All of this was the subject of debates and workshops that we organized in March 2022 at three locations in the Czech Republic. The lecturer was Linda Norris from the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, of which Gulag.cz is also a part.
