Every year, on October 29, on the eve of the Russian Day of Memory of Victims of Political Repression, we commemorate the names of those who died as a result of Soviet state terror. Among the millions of victims in the USSR are thousands of Czechs or citizens of Czechoslovakia.
The event „Returning the names“ takes place in parallel in many cities across Russia (http://october29.ru/return-of-the-names/) and its initiator is the Memorial Society. In the Czech Republic we joined the „Returning the names“ for the first time in 2017. We read the names of documented Czech and Czechoslovak victims in the USSR. Our source is the Memorial databases, a publication by Prof. Mečislav Borák, which documented cases of roughly 1300 executed Czechs and Czechoslovaks in the USSR, and the results of the research of persecuted Czechoslovaks in the USSR conducted by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes.
